Label Reading 101

Posted by Abbey Eurchuk on

Imagine, you arrive at your favourite grocery store. You walk past the locally grown produce and the organic bulk bins of nuts and seeds. You make your way over to the beauty care aisle and you are stopped in your tracks. You look down at your organic non-GMO tomatoes and your favourite water kefir... then you realize something all too common. In your effort to make clean, clear choices with minimal ingredients, you realize that the shampoo you just purchased from  the health food store has 38 ingredients and you can’t pronounce one.

You look down and read a few of the first ingredients; you stumble through words like Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Polyethylene Glycol (PEG), Propylene Glycol and you make a quick decision to purchase it based on the bottle’s advertising that boasts the words “green” and “clean.” What you don’t realize is that the marketing directive of unethical cosmetic companies is to get you to look away from the ingredients and focus instead on, the compelling advertisements.

They may say things like, “Restore your hair's healthy shine” or “Renew your dry skin.” Beautiful images and promises are plastered all over the front, back and sides of your new purchase. These companies rely on the fact that most people do NOT read the label and that even when consumers do, labels can be very difficult to read. This common practice is known as “greenwashing.” Without knowledge of the company and its true level of integrity and purpose, it’s difficult to know what to believe.

When seeking out truly clean, quality body-care products, look for fewer ingredients and more simplistic terms. Ingredients like Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Aloe Vera Juice and Grapeseed Oil are some of the ingredients in our synthetic chemical-free, holistic skincare at Jusu Body.

When you look at labels and see words like, “Alpha-tocopherol” and “Butyrospermum parkii”, you may become overwhelmed again. Jusu Body believes in complete transparency so that you know what every ingredient is, where it comes from and what it does. Check out our “JUSUpedia” located on our website, where you can look up all of the ingredients listed on the JUSU Body product label. For example, Alpha tocopherol is simply Vitamin E and Butyrospermum Parkii is actually Shea Butter.
